Phosphorus is the second most abundant mineral in an animal's body and one of the most expensive to get right in a feed formula. Dicalcium phosphate (DCP) has become the default inorganic source because it delivers both phosphorus and calcium in a ratio poultry and livestock can actually use.

Why phosphorus decides the formula

Phosphorus builds bone, drives energy metabolism, and, in poultry, underpins eggshell quality. Most plant phosphorus is locked up as phytate that birds digest poorly, so formulators add an inorganic source to hit the target for available phosphorus. Get it wrong and you pay twice: too little cripples growth and shell strength, too much wastes money and loads the environment with excreted phosphorus.

What DCP brings to the trough

Feed-grade DCP typically supplies around 23 to 25% calcium and 17 to 18% phosphorus, a naturally balanced package for animals that need both.1 Just as important is availability: phosphorus in DCP is highly digestible, with relative bioavailability commonly cited near 95% and measured phosphorus digestibility in the range of about 80 to 87% depending on method, while its calcium is almost fully available.1,2

That combination is why DCP is the reference against which other feed phosphates are judged, and why it sits in poultry, swine, dairy and aqua formulas across the world.

Dosing and the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio

Requirements shift with species and life stage. Published requirements for modern broiler (chicken breed) starters run near 9.6 g/kg total calcium and 4.8 g/kg available phosphorus in the first ten days, easing to about 7.8 and 3.9 g/kg by the finisher phase.3,4 Broiler diets are generally balanced around a 2:1 calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, while layers need extra calcium for continuous shell formation.

Because DCP is not very water soluble, particle size and consistency matter: a well-controlled grade dissolves predictably in the gut and blends evenly through a premix.

Feed grade is its own standard

Feed-grade DCP is not the same product as fertiliser-grade material. The critical difference is the fluorine limit, which feed standards cap tightly because fluorine accumulates and is toxic to animals over time. Reputable feed DCP is produced to defervescate fluorine to safe levels, and a Certificate of Analysis should confirm fluorine, heavy metals and the guaranteed Ca and P assay.

A growing market

Demand tracks the protein economy. India's dicalcium phosphate market is projected to grow from roughly USD 81 million in 2025 toward USD 150 million by 2035, a compound annual rate near 6.3%, with poultry the fastest-growing segment.5 That sits inside a broader Indian feed-additives market expanding at about 9% a year.6
