Dicalcium phosphate (DCP) and tricalcium phosphate (TCP) sit next to each other on every ingredient supplier's price list, and on paper they look almost interchangeable. In practice, they behave very differently in a tablet press, a feed mill, or a food processing line. Choosing the wrong one costs formulation time, rejected batches, and money.

The chemistry in one minute

Dicalcium phosphate (CaHPO₄, also called calcium hydrogen phosphate) contains one calcium atom per phosphate group. In its anhydrous form factor it carries roughly 29% elemental calcium and about 22% phosphorus.

Tricalcium phosphate (Ca₃(PO₄)₂) packs three calcium atoms against two phosphate groups. That gives it a higher calcium density of around 38–39% elemental calcium, with correspondingly lower phosphorus.

Where DCP wins

DCP's biggest strength is its behaviour under compression. It flows well, compacts predictably, and is chemically inert with most active ingredients. That is why it has been a workhorse tablet diluent and binder in pharmaceutical manufacturing for decades. If you are running direct-compression tablets and need batch-after-batch consistency, DCP is usually the answer.

In animal nutrition, DCP is prized for the opposite half of its formula: the phosphorus. Its balanced calcium-to-phosphorus ratio makes it one of the most widely used mineral supplements in poultry and cattle feed.

Where TCP wins

When the goal is delivering the most calcium in the least powder, TCP's ~39% calcium content is hard to beat. This is why calcium supplements and fortified foods lean on it heavily. It is also an effective anti-caking agent, keeping powdered foods, spice blends and dry mixes free-flowing.

In food processing, FCC-grade TCP shows up as a leavening system component, an acidity regulator, and a fortificant in products from baked goods to plant-based dairy alternatives.

How to choose: three questions

Both products are only as good as the controls behind them. Whichever you choose, insist on a full COA with every lot: assay, pH, particle size, heavy metals, and microbial counts.
